Tube Lines high flyer rolls away with prestigious business award

Lee Jones, Operations Director for Tube Lines, has been crowned Business Manager of the Year at the 2010 HSBC Rail Business Awards.

At a ceremony held last night at the Hilton London, Lee Jones was presented with the award for most outstanding business manager in UK rail.  Lee has certainly stamped his mark with nearly forty years in UK rail, however it was his outstanding work with transforming the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines on the London Underground that saw him scoop the top prize.

On receiving his award Lee said:

I am deeply honoured and humbled to have won this award. Getting recognition from the industry is a huge compliment but I do have to share the credit for improving the performance of the underground lines with my entire team. They work tirelessly, and with little recognition, to consistently deliver an improved service for the millions of passengers who travel on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines every day. I am especially proud to be part of this team and part of this world-class underground network.”

As Director of Operations for Tube Lines, Lee is responsible for managing the day-to-day performance of three of the busiest lines on the Underground. He took up this post in July 2008 having spent the previous four years managing the most challenging line on the entire network – the Northern line. Since taking up the post in July 2008, Lee and his team of over 3,000 employees and contractors have made significant improvements to the safety, reliability and performance of more than 320 km of track, 255 trains, 100 stations, 2,395 bridges and structures, 227 escalators and 82 lifts.

In just eighteen months, his achievements include:

  • improving the reliability of the Northern line by 65% so that  it is now one of the best performing lines on the entire network;
  • setting new benchmarks for workplace safety in the rail industry - a 16% reduction in injuries with employees and contractors now 20 times less likely to suffer injury at work;
  • delivering greater value for money - reducing the overall Operations spend by 15% since 2008 through more efficient working practices, whilst delivering greater performance improvements for passengers; and,
  • supporting his team to find better, more innovative ways to carry out maintenance work. Over the past 12 months alone, the Operations team developed more than 30 innovative technologies or improved working practices bringing savings of approximately £26 million.

Tube Lines was also a runner-up for the Safety and Security Excellence award for its ground breaking ‘Road to Zero’ safety campaign. The year-long campaign galvanised effort across the entire company to achieve a full year’s work without a single Lost Time to Injury - more than 5.8 million hours were worked safely every day and every night without losing a single shift due to injury.
